From Drugs To Death

WRITTEN by SARMAD ASHRAF

Just at the start of this weekend, my friends’ friend died due to use of drugs. I had met this person many times and he was a healthy fellow. He would often talk very less and never gave an impression of the typical drug addict. When I heard the news of his death, I could not believe my ears for a while as to me it was a real shock. The reason in medical terms was declared to be heart attack, but that was through an intensive influence of some severe drugs. This brings me to a question, why do people use drug? A fair answer, from an addict’s point of view, will be to run away from their tensions, hide sorrows, as a social multiplier, a great relaxant, a happiness inducer, or things similar to this. But does death means to separate from tensions, or to hide sorrows? Can death make you relaxed? Having met different sort of people from different parts of the world, for the time being ignoring religion, I am very liberal in the allowance of drugs. For instance, if a person wants to use drugs, I would say yes let him do what he wants. However, my question is directly towards the drug users that why they use the drugs to the level that they cannot control. Specifically the youth who try to use drug as a show-off kind of thing, and they are proud to share with their friends who many “joints” they scored. I would never blame anyone for the deaths of drug addicts, but the drugs and themselves. Why? Well, because if it was any government’s fault or parent’s fault or anyone else’s fault, then all of us would have been dead. There are addicts in the world’s most advanced countries and the world’s most poor countries; you can find drug users who belong to very sophisticated families and also the illiterate ones as well. In my opinion, the biggest controlling factor is your own self and your beliefs, mainly religious ones. It doesn't matter which religion you follow, but if you listen to it carefully, it will always stop you from drugs and following your religion will help you get the inner courage and strength to reject it. Apart from religion, Parents, teachers and other social factors also should play their roles but not as an enemy, but a gentle and caring facilitator. Also, there is desperate need to have intense researches in this area to understand the mind-set of addicts, the reasons and modernized way to assist the addict gain the inner courage to stop using drugs.
